SMART goal setting is great tool that can help to set a goal that is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound. Goal setting is a continuing process that involves good planning and creativity. This concept should be a main part in your life.
Many people fail to accomplish their goals because of many reasons. The most common reasons why people fail in reaching their goal is because they:
- ignore what they exactly want.
- Don’t have a precise idea on how to accomplish their goal.
- Get distracted by daily tasks.
SMART goal setting can help you to get rid of these problems and guide you to the shortest path to your dream.
As I have mentioned above, any goal has to be specific. Let’s say for example that your goal is to lose extra weight. Well this could be a good goal to accomplish, yet it is not specific.
Losing weight is vague and not specific. You can achieve that goal and lose 2 pounds. But, is this what you really want? Can this be considered a goal? So you should set a more specific goal like losing 25 pounds by pursuing a well planned weight loss program.
Your goal should be measurable. With the many little tasks in life, it is not easy sometimes to stay motivated towards your goal. In this case, all the efforts would be wasted for nothing.
Create the standards for the measuring process, through dividing the goal into smaller objectives, which can facilitate your mission in reaching the ultimate goal. These measures will make your goal attainable.
The goal should be realistic, so don’t set goals that you know it’s impossible to reach. A realistic goal doesn’t mean that it is easy to accomplish, but it takes some effort to do so.
For example, let’s say you aim to lose 20 pounds within 2 weeks, this is obviously very unrealistic. In this case, all your effort will be wasted for nothing. So be realistic!
When it comes to time, this aspect is pretty important in life. Everything in life is limited by time. You goal has to be time-bound. Setting a specific time frame to accomplish your goals can motivate follow your plan straight to your goal.
The concept of SMART goal is all about planning. Once your goal is set you should make a clear plan to facilitate your mission. Remember, Goal should be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time-bound, SMART.
